InteRvening EarLier In life for hEalthier liFestyles (RELIEF): An evidence-based approach to reduce exposure and use of emerging tobacco products among school children

Description

RELIEF (InteRvening EarLier In life for hEalthier liFestyles) tackles one of today’s most urgent public health challenges: the growing appeal of e-cigarettes and emerging tobacco products among children. By listening directly to young students aged 6–12, as well as to the parents and teachers who shape their daily lives, the project uncovers how curiosity, misconceptions, and social influences take root early on. Blending cutting-edge research with engaging awareness campaigns, practical training, and digital tools, RELIEF transforms evidence into action, empowering families, educators, health professionals, and policymakers across Europe to protect children, strengthen prevention, and inspire healthier choices from the very start of life.

Objectives

  • Understand early attitudes and behaviors related to e-cigarettes and emerging tobacco products among children aged 6–12, as well as their parents and teachers.
  • Identify knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and social influences that shape young people’s perceptions of tobacco and nicotine products.
  • Strengthen prevention efforts by equipping parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals with practical knowledge and skills to address emerging tobacco use.
  • Design and test user-centered intervention tools and awareness campaigns that resonate with children and the adults who support them.
  • Support evidence-based policymaking by translating research findings into clear guidelines and recommendations at national and EU levels.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across Europe through digital platforms and stakeholder engagement to reduce inequalities and protect vulnerable groups.
